April showers can’t keep Brotherhood Mission away!

We had a wonderful month full of plenty of runs and great times!

Our race for April was the Hunger Walk and 5k held in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum.  We had a great showing from Brotherhood Mission and from BOMF! For our team, it was the first race Tyrone, Chris, and James had participated in! Tyrone came in a little over 26 minutes, which was so awesome for his first race! Katie, Peter, Dan, Debbie, Kris, Elizabeth, Brendan, Stacy, Juan, Andrew, Jesse, and Ovidio all participated in the run and had a blast on a beautiful morning. We are looking forward to many more runs in the upcoming season.

Jesse celebrated a new personal record at the Run for Jake when he came in under 30 minutes for the first time in a race. Congrats Jesse!

Reggie stands with other Philadelphia Ridge Avenue team members in the Back on My Feet circle before the 2010 Broad Street Run on May 2, 2010.

More than 150 runners who completed the 2010 Broad Street Run on behalf of Back on My Feet Philadelphia Sunday, May 2, 2010 raised in excess of $50,000 for the organization.

In conjunction with 50 members and a crush of other non-residential members, they helped give the organization  one of the largest presences at the 30,000-person 10-mile race.

Below, watch three residential members talk about their experiences with the run, with Back on My Feet and what they might say to those 150 FundRacers if they got the chance.

This weekend, he’ll add another, by running the Broad Street Run, Philadelphia’s noted 10-mile, 30,000-person race. The resident at Brotherhood Mission who grew up around 33rd Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue in North Philadelphia will celebrate a full year running with Back on My Feet next month.

Stone will be among nearly 50 Back on My Feet Philadelphia members who run the storied race. Find a press release here about Stacey and the rest running the Broad Street Run.

Members of the team at the Frostbite Five Miler in Ambler, Pa. in February 2010.

We wished for less snow and we got the opposite.

Though we were hit hard by the snow during the month of February, Brotherhood Mission still continued to pound the pavement(or snow covered sidewalks of Fishtown!)

February was a chilly yet very exciting month for our team!! We welcomed many new non-residential members as well as new residential members to the team! Our circle is the morning is growing to great lengths! We look forward to our MWF runs, especially when we hear Bruce coming up to the circle cheering, “The champ is here!’

Nearly 100 members and supporters crowded around the bowling lanes and bar of the second floor loung of North Bowl in Northern Liberties for a Back on My Feet social event Mon. Feb. 22.

See the photos here.

More than a gathering, the event served as a celebration for member goals, announcements and at least two goodbyes.

Vernon W., an alumnus from Ready, Willing and Able, announced his engagement, Freda, an alumna from Mercy, shared the news of living in her own apartment and taking classes at Community College of Philadelphia and Bob W. was there fresh off his 500th mile.

Before singing Happy Birthday to Stacey from Brotherhood, the assembled group listened to goodbyes from Founder Anne Mahlum and Program Director Wylie Belasik, both of whom are moving to Washington D.C. to lead our expansion there.

Most of the night, though, was spent bowling and eating, playing pool, catching up with team members and friends and talking to new faces. Member Fe Fe earned the night’s high score with a 140.

The entire Back on My Feet team wants to offer a special thank you to the North Bowl staff for their help putting on such a wonderful event for our members.

After all the the holiday excitement, Brotherhood Mission was looking for a nice, easy entrance into 2010! We started the New Year off with a run of course!

This month we are focusing on increasing our mileage for some bigger races! Look for us running longer this month!

We had a blast participating in the Pickle run with the other Back on My Feet teams! Ovidio, Jim, Andrew, and Stacy all race great times in this race! It was such a fun time and great see hang out with the other Philly teams!

In other good news, Stacy has been working hard at Goodwill Industries in Philadelphia. He was chosen for a job there in late December and has been working all throughout this month, doing really well! Stacy was also featured as the BOMF Team wide Member of the Month. Check out the article on Stacy, highlighting all his achievements. He has been doing some great things!

January 29th also marked the one year anniversary of the start of the Brotherhood Mission Team!! We began last year in 2009 and it is hard to believe that a year has gone by already! So many thanks go out to the wonderful non- residential members and our residential members who put so much time and effort into each run! You can be sure we had fun celebrating!

As February approaches, we look forward to participating in the Frostbite Five Miler and training for some more longer races! We are also looking forward to some warmer temperatures and less snow!

Come out and join us for a run, MWF at 5:30 am! We’d love to have you!
