That same day, teammate Greg S. completed the half marathon event in a personal best time. It was a banner month for Greg, who, in addition running two half marathons (both the one in Delaware and the Frederick event), transitioned into SRO at MCVET, officially becoming a BoMF Alum in the process.
The end of May saw Back on My Feet Baltimore participate in the MCVET annual 5k and 10k races for the third year in a row. One of MCVET’s annual tent pole events, we had a great turnout for the race, with several people proudly displaying their MCVET affiliation with our team t-shirts. For the second year in a row, the team was joined on course by some of Alisa G. and Kim W.’s students, who even fund-raised on behalf of MCVET. Despite the day’s brutally high temperatures, the morning proved to be an incredibly successful and enjoyable one for our team. Res members John J. and Henry T., and non-res member Shannon W., all completed their first races, and Lauren L., Greg S., Mitch G., Dee L., Shannon W., Steve M., and Sue H. were among those on our team who placed in their age groups in their respective races! A big thanks goes out to all our res members and the rest of the MCVET students for being out there early that morning, helping to ensure that the race went as smoothly as it did, and offering encouragement and aid along the course.
RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: HENRY T.
Member since: April 2011
Number of Accumulated Miles: 30
What has been your best moment since joining Back on My Feet?: Finishing the MCVET 5k run, my first race with the team.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with running?: Running onward when my ankles keep swelling. The pain is challenging during the morning runs and having to stop wears me down because I don’t want to because of the team support. Thank you, BoMF team.
What is a goal you want to achieve in the next three months?: 1 – Lose ten pounds; 2 – Reduce my waistline by one inch; 3 – Follow the guidelines of BoMF to move my life forward.
What do you think about when you’re running?: The recent wreckage of my past and how many people were affected up until today. Praying all the time for God to grant me wisdom and to see and speak softly. Grant me the wisdom of patience and the absence of hurry and indecision. To one day soon make amends.
What’s the next race you’re doing with the BoMF crew?: That’s a good question. I don’t have another race lined up yet but am looking forward to joining the team for the pre-B-10 miler pasta party!
“Our morning runs have become that much livelier and fun since Henry joined the team back in April. His joyful and vivacious attitude is infectious and his sense of humor has helped to make running with him a really enjoyable experience. While he often maintains a lighthearted and self-deprecating demeanor, his dedication to his new teammates, his running, and moving his life forward are at the same time extremely evident in the way he approaches his involvement with BoMF. He continues to grow stronger with each and every run and just completed his very first race at the MCVET 5k! Most recently, this commitment he displays was recognized by his teammates when he was elected our new team captain on the first of June! All of us have truly enjoyed having Henry out there with us and are excited by the possibilities that lie ahead, both for him and for Team MCVET with him as captain.” – Peter Jackson, MCVET Team Leader
NON-RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: MARIA D. Shoe size: 7.5 (running shoe, 8.5)
Member since: the beginning! (March 2009)
What has been your best moment since joining Back on My Feet?: When I go to a new town or city, especially when running, I notice myself saying hello to everyone along my route. Running with BoMF has made me more open.
What do you think about when you’re running?: Holding myself back to lower miles because of my plantar fasciitis (caused by skiing!)
What’s your next race with the BoMF crew?: MCVET 5k
“A BoMFer since the beginning, Maria’s energy, enthusiasm, and dedication to Team MCVET have been unwavering. This was especially evident this past spring, when she stepped into the role of Social Coordinator during the middle of the two-year birthday celebration and through her hard work and commitment, made sure that the team did not skip a beat. Ever since, she’s been busy planning and helping to coordinate a variety of new and exciting social activities for the team, ranging from tours of Camden Yards to summer concerts in Patterson Park to giving back to the running world by leading water stops at local races, while still bringing her thoughtful and compassionate attitude to the runs each morning. We’re all truly grateful to have her as a part of Team MCVET!” – Peter Jackson, MCVET Team Leader

Thanks Peter Jackson with respect to this really good article. Plantar Fasciitis is a very unpleasant condition…I should know – I am a sufferer myself!
The most effective treatment for me is enough rest in conjunction with the proper sort of stretching exercises.
