At long last, May arrived for all those training for the Delaware Running Festival. On May 15th, our runners were greeted with humid conditions and overcast skies in Wilmington, DE. However, that did not stop our runners from giving it their best. Roy T. successfully completed the 2011 Delaware Marathon, his second lifetime and first with BoMF. The race proved to be quite eventful, as he missed the start, took a couple of wrong turns, and made a few bathroom breaks along the way. Regardless of his time, or how far he ran (definitely further than a marathon), he is already setting his sights on the next marathon at the Baltimore Running Festival this fall.
Patrick B., a long standing member of team BSTAT, officially moved out of the Station this month to his own apartment overlooking Druid Hill Park. Despite being a few miles from the Station, he has still made it out a few times this month. Gary A. surpassed the 50 mile mark and continues to become a better runner with each passing week. Sam M., BSTAT’s top prospect, has already stretched his longest run to 7 miles and is targeting the Baltimore 10 Miler in June. We were also glad to welcome our newest residential member, Al, to the team. Kenny M, ever the running machine, has also shown he has talent with a camera. His very artistic picture of William Donald Schafer’s statue holding the moon was featured in B Free Daily on 5/11/2011. On May 22nd, we were given a tour of the Sports Legends Museum across from Camden Yards by Race Coordinator Greg S. We even got to see various items that were not on display thanks to our inside connection!
BSTAT also experienced a regime change at the team organizer position. Pat H., BSTAT’s long standing TO for well over a year, stepped down at the beginning of the month. This provided a great opportunity for Mark and Erin M. to step up to fill the role! Pat has been busy traveling the country to sell a book he authored about his experiences in the real estate industry. Thanks to Pat for being such a consistent presence for so long!
BSTAT will conclude the month of May with a 5k/10K race to benefit MCVET on Memorial Day Weekend. For some of our teammates, this will merely be a stepping stone to a bigger goal: the Baltimore 10 Miler in June. The temperature outside may be rising, and that notorious hot and humid Maryland summer may be upon us, but team BSTAT has no plans on slowing down!
RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: GARY A.
Shoe size: 12
Member since: March 2011
Miles accumulated: 75
What has been your best moment since joining BoMF?: My first race.
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with running?: Commitment.
What is a goal you want to achieve in the next three months?: Run 4 miles everyday.
“When Gary first joined the team, he was quiet and reserved. He would also be the first to admit that he did not particularly like running very much or waking up early. However, after just a couple of weeks, his attitude changed in a hurry. He started to look forward to the morning runs and insisted that if he was going to be up at 5:30, he was going to run! Anytime we had a team meeting or did not have a run that day, he was always the first to mention that we should be running. His first race with BoMF, the Bruckenthal 5K, was more difficult than expected, but just a week later he ran another 5K in downtown Baltimore and did substantially better. His quick improvement shows his dedication to running. Though he is still relatively new to the team, he has become a very consistent presence out there.” -”Fast” Dan Miranda, Baltimore Station Team Leader

Favorite post-race meal?: Chocolate milk.
What advice would you give a brand-new runner?: The first mile is the hardest.
Fact most people wouldn’t know about you?: I dream very vivid dreams!
“Pat has been a big part of BSTAT for a long time. He has been our Team Organizer for just about as long as I have been on the team. He has always been a very consistent presence in the morning, being part of that glue that holds the team together. He never minds hanging back and walking with injured runners to keep them company, and always helps to make sure no one is out there running alone. He also frequently participates in our team’s banter. With all the characters we have, it certainly makes for interesting conversations. I can still remember Pat and George discussing for a week straight about how to properly take care of a bald head, and trying to figure out why there would be cologne named “Obama.” Though he is stepping down as our Team Organizer, he is still out in the mornings on a regular basis, and I’m glad for it!” -”Fast” Dan Miranda, BSTAT Team Leader
