On Thursday, May 5, Back on My Feet Chicago members gathered at the YMCA Lawson House to attend Orientation 2.0, where University of Illinois-Chicago assistant professor Dr. Gloria Balague spoke about the utility of exercise in successful drug recovery and mental health outcomes. Dr. Balague is president-elect for the American Psychological Association–Division 47 (Exercise and Sports Psychology) and is the sport psychology consultant to the US Track and Field team. She has worked with clients covering the entire spectrum of disorders, including addiction, and attendees found her presentation especially informative and helpful! Current YMCA Lawson House residential member Andy Allen also spoke about the role exercise has played in his life and recovery. His candor was both enlightening and moving. Following their talks, Dr. Balague and Andy held a question and answer session. Back on My Feet Chicago would like to thank both Dr. Balague and Andy for making Orientation 2.0 a huge success!

Once again, THUMB welcomed three new residential members to our team!  Stephen L., Eric L., and Jimmy M. joined the team and came out ready to run.  The guys had actually done some training before becoming official members to make sure they were ready to run with the team and they are already increasing their distances!

Donnell M. had a big month as he celebrated one year of sobriety and graduated from HUM.  We are all so proud of Donnell and excited to celebrate his accomplishments with him. On April 3rd, HUM held its annual graduation ceremony at Martin’s West.  THUMB had four of its teammates walk across the stage to receive their diploma:  Donnell M., Mike H., Moses J., and Andrew F.  Several of our teammates were present and it was a great celebration for all of the guys’ hard work.  Read more…

Attention South Shore runners! The Greater Boston Running Company‘s Hingham location has graciously offered to host a Non-Resident orientation for anyone interested in volunteering with Back on My Feet.
The company was started in 2007 with the opening of the company’s first store in Lexington. More than just a business venture, the Running Company started as an expression of the enthusiasm for the sport of running and its healthy lifestyle. The Greater Boston Running Company’s enthusiasm is shared by a well-educated, dedicated, and experienced staff, committed to the sport of running as a “way of life.” Clearly, this makes them a perfect fit for the life model of Back on My Feet!
We’re thrilled to have the support of another pillar of the Boston-area running community and greatly look forward to the upcoming Non-Resident Member orientation, when all members of Back on My Feet will receive 20 percent off footwear and apparel purchases.
When: Thursday, June 2nd from 6-8pm
Where: Greater Boston Running Company, Derby Street Shops, Hingham [map]

The Back on My Feet teams enjoyed the second annual Open Mic Night on Thursday, May 12th. The event was held in the lower level of Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse, at 2nd and F St., NE.  Ebenezer’s had the stage and BoMF brought the talent. With over a dozen acts, including fantastic team performances by La Casa, CSS, Blair House and NSV.  There was singing, dancing and a memorable cover of Justin Bieber’s song “Baby” that involved helium balloons.  Emery was well-represented by res-member Scotty W. and non-res member Dion H., who ended up winning 2nd place for his poetry.  Ellis A. grabbed 3rd place for his hilarious comedy, while 1st went to the whole CSS team, led by Dave W., for their spoken-word call-and-response performance.  BoMF staff also got involved with Lady Gaga’s song “Born This Way”. It was a fun, laugh-filled evening that allowed us to highlight the amazing people that belong to the BoMF family!  The videos of all of the performances can be seen here, on the Washington, DC Back on My Feet YouTube Channel.

Ponchos, Hugs and Foot Foggers. To the average person these three things have absolutely nothing in common. To this member of Team Progress House they are as related as a brother and sister. Allow me to explain.

I will start at the beginning with hugs. BoMF is an organization that has cast aside the traditional greetings such as handshakes and simple hello’s and firmly embraced the somewhat more personal form of greeting known as the hug. Traditionally a hug is reserved for romantic partners, family members and close friends. Not anymore. If you are a BoMF staff member, volunteer or resident you will give and receive more hugs prior to and after your morning run than the average person receives in a week. While in the beginning these hugs were somewhat of an alien concept to us, as not many people had previously wanted to hug us, they have now become the norm and the only true and acceptable way to greet a fellow BoMF’er.

Now we move onto Ponchos. As anyone who has run with us this month knows, it has rained. Not a pleasant cool you down while you run type rain, no, these have been shoe soaking, sock sopping rains. Not pleasant at all. Knowing this, imagine that it’s 5:30am, I am sitting in the lobby of Progress House waiting on my fellow team members to straggle downstairs and staff and volunteers to arrive so that we can commence our Scuba lessons, oops, I mean our morning run, as you may have guessed, in the rain. The door open and in strides either The Gorton Fisherman or a very large banana. I wiped my eyes and looked again and realized it was neither. It was Beth, our Executive Director in a bright yellow poncho. She glanced around the lobby, spotted me and threw a folded up poncho my way and with a huge smile said “put this on”. One would have assumed that the dubious look upon my face would have quelled any further desires Beth had to see me in a poncho, but sadly for me this was not to be the case. It seems my ever increasing objections only increased her desire to see me in this poncho. Read more…

On May 18th, 2011, Back on My Feet Chicago celebrated the long-awaited launch of the Lake View YMCA team, Chicago’s fourth team with a one mile inaugural run! All three current Back on My Feet Chicago teams were in attendance to show their support, offer encouraging words, and welcome the new members to the Back on My Feet family! Over 60 residential and non-residential members joined the new team for their first of many Back on My Feet morning runs! Finishers were met with cheers and high fives! One of the Lake View YMCA team members said it best,

“I am happy to be a part of our gathering this morning. Follow through is the next step and I do carry the same enthusiasm into our next run. The BoMF mission statement is simple. From a personal perspective, the goal will take effort. While I understand my role leading in to our initial meeting, not once this morning did I feel a sense of hierarchy. Individuals that carry this selfless quality are the best ambassadors. My goal is not to become comfortable and complacent within my current social economic environment. However, to use the tools I know I carry towards independence without borders.”

The entire Back on My Feet Chicago team shares this same excitement for the new members and knows this team will flourish! A big “THANK YOU” goes out to everyone that participated in the inaugural run, especially to the Lake View YMCA and their staff for their continued support! You all truly made it a special time! View pictures from the morning here!

Team Christopher’s Place had a busy April, as we recovered from March’s birthday celebrations and also reached peak training weeks for May’s Delaware Marathon.

On April 4, we celebrated the Orioles’ Opening Day by running down Eutaw Street and stopping at Camden Yards as part of our 3-mile route for the morning.  Many of us wore our Orioles gear and Team CP even ended up on the morning news!  It was a great start to the day and a great start to the Orioles’ season, as they won their first homestand of the year. Maybe we brought them luck!

Later in April, Team CP was honored to recognize the graduation of four of our alumni members: Leon P., Mike F., Donnell W., and Ricky P.  Leon and Mike were inducted as BoMF alumni at a ceremony at the Helping Up Mission with several other new alumni from other teams. Diane presented them with their awards as many CP teammates cheered in the audience.  Since Donnell and Ricky had work conflicts that kept them from attending the ceremony, Nikia and CP held a separate weekend event for their induction.  Teammates Brian C., Hatchett, Mike H., and Mike M. all joined the ceremony and spoke to congratulate Ricky and Donnell. Both ceremonies were very moving. We all are so proud of our alumni!

At the end of April, CP participated in the Nate Bruckenthal 5k. This was our second year attending this race, and Team CP had an impressive showing as Eric placed first in his age group, and Kevin placed second in his age group! Brian, Mike M., and Stacey also raced and finished with super speedy times.

We also welcomed two new runners to our team: Shaun and Abdullah. We’re excited to run with them and help them achieve new milestones!  April was a big month for many of our teammates:

  • Hatchett reached 150 miles and is planning to move out into community housing soon
  • Dominique hit 200 miles and is training for the Delaware half (his longest race to date)
  • Mike H. reached 300 miles while continuing to work in food service
  • Mike M. reached 300 miles and will begin working in May
  • Tony passed 350 miles, recently began attending classes and is planning to move out in May
  • Johnathan passed 950 miles and is looking forward to his second marathon in May

We have a big month coming up in May as many of our teammates are participating in the Delaware Running Festival. Look out for Johnathan, Brian, and Reisel in the full marathon; Dominique, Mike M., Preston, and Jordyn in the half, and Jeanne in the relay! Good luck!

RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: BRIAN C.

August 2009 (start of team CP!)

Brian, Member of the Month, during the Nikia Half

Member since:

Shoe size: 13

Miles: 500+

What has been your best moment since joining Back on My Feet?: There are so many good ones. I will have to choose finishing the Nikia Half at my target time.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with running?: My biggest challenge has been breaking the 3 and the 10 mile markers.  After that, it was just a matter of doing consistent running to achieve mile markers.  Also doing the nonrunning- related training, to strengthen my body.

What is a goal you want to achieve in the next three months?: Reach a sub-7 minute timed mile, and finish a 5k in 24 minutes.

What do you think about when you’re running?: The finish line and my time dominate my thoughts, my quality of breathing, and the way my legs feel (tired or strong).

What’s the next race you’re doing with the BoMF crew?: The Delaware Marathon on May 15th!

“Brian has been with Team CP since the very beginning! As the most-tenured member at CP, he is a respected leader and training partner.  He’s truly committed to running and to the team, as he balances a tough work schedule with marathon training.  Brian is running his first marathon in a few weeks (Delaware) and we are all so excited for him. Good luck, Brian!” – Sarah O’Connor, team leader

NON-RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: JORDYN MANUCCI October 2010

Jordyn, Member of the Month, before the Nikia Half

Member since:

Shoe size: 10

What has been your best moment since joining Back on My Feet?: My best moment since joining BoMF was the birthday run.  It was great to have all the teams circle up together and then run as a whole group.  It was just amazing to see how many people in Baltimore support BoMF.

What do you think about when you’re running?: I mostly think about not trying to trip and fall.  I also will talk or will be making lists in my head about what I need to do that day.

What’s the next race you’re doing with the BoMF crew?: My next race is the Delaware Half!  I was really excited to hear that the Delaware race was a BoMF crew race.  I’m going up the night before, as my parents live in Wilmington, but it will be awesome to circle up with everyone!

What would you tell someone considering joining BoMF Baltimore?: I tell everyone about BoMF.  I let them know it’s more than a running group.  It’s a great place to meet new people and find new friends.  Plus it’s nice to have people to talk to when running.  Having tried to run and train by myself before, I really appreciate having people to support me now when running.  As for CP, we’re a great group and fairly diverse.  It’s nice having people that are your own speed or will slow down or speed up and try to kick your butt.  But mostly, the res guys at CP are awesome and are all trying to make their lives better, which is what BoMF is all about.

“Jordyn joined Team CP last fall and quickly stepped in as Social Coordinator this spring. She’s done an amazing job planning activities for us and keeping our team motivated.  Jordyn has impacted our team so much in just a few short months. Thank you for all that you do for Team CP!” – Sarah O’Connor, team leader

On the morning of May 17th, 2011, Back on My Feet Chicago proudly celebrated the launch of the Lake View YMCA team with a shoe fitting at Universal Sole! Back on My Feet staff and Lake View core team members greeted the new YMCA residential members with hugs and words of encouragement as Universal Sole staff fitted each for the perfect pair of running shoes! The new shoes and gear brought smiles to the new members’ faces, and excitement to the entire crowd that gathered to watch the fitting. If the Lake View members weren’t already excited about tomorrow’s inaugural run, they definitely are now!

Ding.

It’s an email from the boss. Oh no.

Wait… I get to wear my running shoes to work on Monday?

Wicked awesome! That’s way cooler than HR rolling a margarita machine around the office on Fridays…

Back on My Feet is on the prowl for innovative companies hoping to involve their employees in a spirit-filled, community building campaign that is sweeping Dallas. Sneaker Day.

Employees are asked to donate $5 in exchange for the opportunity to wear their most scuffed up sneaks to raise funds for educational programs, vocational training and financial aid for Back on My Feet members. Organizations are asked to match employee donations and encourage clients, colleagues and vendors to participate in a day that promotes awareness of a program combating homelessness in Dallas.
