April was another eventful month for BSTAT. We welcomed a new residential member, Gary A. to our ranks. He is already used to the morning routine and now looks forward to running at 5:30AM. It’s hard to believe he has only been with BSTAT for a month!
On Monday the 11th, we were given the opportunity to serve dinner at the Station. After helping to prepare and serve dinner, we were able to sit down with members of the Station and help spread the word about Back on My Feet. We were then given a tour of the building, which included going on the roof. It was awesome to see Federal Hill from that vantage point! The entire experience gave all the non residential members a little perspective on what it’s like once our runners go back inside.
On the 14th, Mitch S. officially became an alumni of the BoMF Baltimore Chapter. He was the first from BSTAT and was joined by several other inductees at a full blown induction ceremony at Helping Up Mission. Though he has moved out of the Station, he can still be found regularly attending the morning runs, being only a few Light Rail stops away. He has become a very strong runner, so it is great to see him keeping up with it. We all hear he has quite the nice apartment now!
April 30th was our race for the month, a 5K on the Coast Guard Yard at Curtis Bay. Four of our residential members ran including, Roy T., Sam M., George H., and Gary A. Alumnus, Mitch, joined them, as well as Race Coordinator, Greg S., Next Steps Core, Anni I., and Team Organizer, Pat H. BSTAT certainly closed out the month strong with this race. Roy, who is now a mere two weeks from running his first marathon posted a 24:50 and placed 2nd in the 50-59 year old age group. Sam ran a 29:23, 4 minutes faster than his 5K time from February. Mitch, the ever lean, mean, fighting-machine, posted a 30:13. George came through in 32:30 and racked up 2nd place for the 60-69 age group. Gary, our newest member, completed his first race side-by-side with ARW Alumnus Darius T. in 33:16.
With less than 2 weeks until the Delaware Marathon, Roy is looking strong. BSTAT would wish him luck, but he will not be needing it, he is ready!
NON-RESIDENTIAL MEMBER OF THE MONTH: ERIN MOYER
Member since: January 2011
Best BoMF moment: Running seven miles with a resident who previously hadn’t run more than four!
Biggest challenge with running: Ignoring the impulse to stop when it feels like a tough run.
Goal in the next three months: Start training for my second marathon (hopefully I will PR!)
What do you think about when you’re running?: How good or bad my body feels.
What was your last race and how did you do? Baltimore Half Marathon. I did not train well, had just returned home from my honeymoon nine hours before, and was injured about half way through. I felt terrible but finished with a decent time.
Favorite Post Race meal? A nice heavy breakfast meal like eggs and/or pancakes.
What advice would you give a brand-new runner? Never say you can’t! I always thought I’d never run more than 3 miles, then it was 5, then never a half marathon, then never a full marathon! We really limit ourselves.
Fact most people would not know about you: I was never athletic in the least until I started running!
“In the beginning of February, we had welcomed two new non-residential members to our ranks. We had no way to decide who to award the March member of the month to, so I flipped a coin. Mark Moyer won, but now Erin gets her turn. Erin quickly became a regular at our morning runs, including Saturdays. Whether it’s helping to drive people to events, or running with whomever needs a partner, I know I can count on Erin to be a great teammate. Whether the pace is on the quick side or the slower side, she is always willing to run with anyone. I am so glad to have not one but two strongly dedicated additions to our team!” -Fast Dan Miranda, BSTAT Team Leader
