With two races taking place in March the team at La Casa certainly covered some miles! The team first participated in the St. Patty’s Day 8K hosted by Capital Running Company. The race took place in downtown Washington, DC starting on the historic Pennsylvania Ave and passing over Constitution Ave and Independence Ave, with a turnaround in front of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. The weather was perfect for a race and the runners were in good spirits, with dancing and festivities starting before the race even took place!
La Casa also took part in the SunTrust National Marathon/Half and Relay that started over at RFK Stadium in Northeast Washington, DC. One relay team from La Casa ran the 13.1 mile course. Watson M. ran the half marathon for the team, his first half marathon ever!
Res-member Tony E. started working as a Home Health Aid and attended Accenture’s Skills to Succeed Workshop, a mandatory part of the BoMF program. Melvin B. and Kenny M. both started job programs at GRM, Melvin. B using his grant money to pay off court fines.
It’s been great to see the efforts of Karina, Bronwen, Sally, Dave and all the other La Casa volunteers put in so much effort, and so many miles, to help the residential members work their way up to being able to run, and finish, 8K’s, as well as a half marathon and relay legs in a 16,000 person race! March was certainly a great racing month for La Casa.
The La Casa team also participated in the Back on My Feet Birthday Bash, celebrating BoMF’s first year, and numerous accomplishments, here in DC. Folks were dressed up and ready to go for the night’s dinner and dancing. Pictures of the event can be found HERE!
Clarence B. is the holder of the coveted Gold Running Shoe award for being selected as the March residential member of the onth. Sally C. joins him by being selected as the non-residential member of the month. Both runners are consistent and dedicated to the team, and are a big part of the success of the La Casa community.
