In December 2009, Resources for Human Development, a human services nonprofit serving people in need with more than 160 programs in 14 states, launched Philadelphia’s only street newspaper, One Step Away, produced and sold by people experiencing homelessness.

Its monthly issues feature content written and reported by men, women and children in the city’s homeless population. Some of its contributors are Back on My Feet members. RHD operates the Ridge Avenue Center, at which we have a team, among others in Philadelphia.

Ahead of its next issue, due later this month, we will be featuring some OSA’s archives on this blog, including stories written about our organization.

This will be the first step in a larger partnership between our organizations, starting with content and otherwise uniting in our common mission of combating homelessness.

According to RHD, “there are 26 street newspapers across North America, but One Step Away is the only one in which the content is almost entirely produced by the homeless.”

Find them being sold around Philadelphia:

OSA relies on the standard street newspaper model endorsed by the North American Street Newspaper Association. RHD funds the initial press run. The homeless men and women who distribute the paper give RHD 25 cents per copy to offset the printing costs. They then distribute One Step Away on the street for a donation of $1. [Source]

I have beautiful, very large home grown cucumbers given to me by my neighbor, that I can not use quickly enough. Can you use them? If so, where can I drop them off? I work at 16th & Arch St. in Center City; and live in Mt. Airy, Phila. Also, I think your newspaper is a blessing. God Bless your efforts!
